How to write Etsy listings for digital downloads
A digital buyer cannot hold the item, so the listing has to answer every question a package would: what files, what size, how they arrive, how to print them and what you may do with them.
Digital download listing checklist
- Say in the title and first line that it is a digital download and nothing is shipped.
- List every file: format (PDF, JPG, PNG, SVG, Canva link), paper or pixel size, and page count.
- Name the software or app needed to open or edit the files.
- Explain delivery: files appear in the buyer's Etsy Purchases once payment is confirmed.
- Add that downloads need a browser on a phone or computer, not the Etsy app.
- If you deliver a ZIP file, say so and mention it needs unzipping.
- Give print guidance: paper, home or print shop, scaling, and that colors vary by screen and printer.
- State the license: personal use only, or what commercial use you allow.
- Explain what happens if something is wrong with a file, since digital items cannot be returned.
- Show what is included in the first photo, so buyers do not expect a frame or physical print.
What Etsy says about digital files
How to Manage Your Digital Listings: you can upload up to five files per listing, each up to 20MB. File names are limited to 70 characters (letters, numbers, periods, underscores or hyphens). If your set does not fit, say in the description how the files are split or bundled, for example in a ZIP file.
How to Download a Digital Item: instant downloads are available once payment is confirmed, and buyers get an email. Files are in Purchases, under Download Files. Digital purchases cannot be downloaded in the Etsy app, so buyers need a mobile browser or a computer. Guest buyers find the link in their receipt email. There are generally no limits on when or how often a file can be downloaded. The file type is shown in the listing's Highlights.
How do I Set Return Policies on My Listings: return or exchange policies cannot be set on digital listings. You can still resolve a buyer's problem as you see fit.
How Printed Items From Digital Purchases Work for Sellers: Etsy is testing an option for buyers to order prints of eligible digital files through a third-party print provider. It applies to some shops in the US and Canada, and you can opt out in your shop settings.

Digital download listing questions
