How it works
What the tag checker looks at — and why
Paste tags separated by commas or new lines. Every tag gets its own status: Good, Tip, Improve or Fix. “Fix” means Etsy would not accept the tag as it is or the slot is wasted on an exact duplicate. “Improve” and “Tip” are judgment calls you can ignore if you have a reason.
20 characters per tag
Each tag can be up to 20 characters, spaces included. Longer phrases have to be shortened or split before Etsy accepts them.
Duplicates and near duplicates
“Wedding sign”, “Wedding Sign” and “wedding signs” describe the same search. Keeping one frees the other slots for different phrases.
Single-word tags
Etsy's own example: “custom bracelet” is stronger than separate “custom” and “bracelet” tags. A phrase describes a more specific search and saves a slot.
Tags that only repeat your title
If you add your title, the checker marks tags whose words all appear in it already. A tag that adds at least one new word can describe an extra search.
Characters Etsy does not accept
Etsy tags accept letters, numbers and spaces. Apostrophes and hyphens work inside words, but not at the start of a tag. Symbols like &, ! or # are flagged.

According to Etsy Help: How to Use Tags to Get Found in Search, a listing can have up to 13 tags of up to 20 characters each. Tags can contain letters, numbers and spaces; apostrophes and hyphens can be used within words but not at the start of a tag.
The Etsy Seller Handbook (Keywords 101) recommends using all 13 tags, preferring multi-word phrases over single words, not repeating the categories and attributes you already selected (they work like tags), and skipping deliberate misspellings.
